The Limits of Luc Besson’s ‘Made-in-France’ Blockbusters: From the Transnational to the Postnational in Valerian and Anna

Abstract

AbstractBy creating EuropaCorp in 2000, Luc Besson provided an alternative model to Hollywood studio cinema that could compete in the globalised markets of the new millennium. The chapter discusses how his latest productions, Valerian and the City of the Thousand Planets (Besson, 2017) and Anna (Besson, 2019), French films shot in English with non-French casts, try to renegotiate transnational and postnational features but fail to consolidate his model of global popular filmmaking made in France. It argues that after the global success of Lucy (Besson, 2014) had revived the potential of the EuropaCorp transnational production model, Valerian and Anna have shown the limits of Besson’s brand and filmmaking methods. It also identifies reasons behind their mixed reception and links their disappointing results to the implosion of EuropaCorp in 2020.
