1. Unfortunately the history of education and masculinity is not one very well serviced by the existing literature, particularly for the early modern period. A very important and useful recent volume is Anthony Fletcher’s, Growing Up in England. The Experience of Childhood 1600–1914 (New Haven and London, 2008). Other than this a number of earlier studies, some of them path breaking ones in the study of manliness, provide some guidance and context, see E. A.
