5. K. Imaeda andJ. Avidan (Nuovo Cimento,32, 1497 (1964)), have also obtained eq. (6) for bosons, which they refer to as Planck's distribution. They show that this distribution gives a satisfactory fit to data from cosmic-ray jets and that a distribution of the form $$\omega _ \bot \left( {p_ \bot } \right)dp_ \bot = 2\alpha p_ \bot \exp \left[ { - ap_ \bot ^2 } \right]dp_ \bot $$ gives a much poorer fit.H. H. Aly, M. F. Kaplon andM. L. Shen (Nuovo Cimento,32, 905 (1964)) andE. M. Friedländer (Nuovo Cimento,41, 417 (1966)) have made the erroneous assertion that the latter form is necessarily implied by the assumption of axial symmetry.Aly,et al., reached this mistaken conclusion by imposing too strong a condition on the form of the distribution function: namely, that ω(p ┴)=f(p x)·f(py). This is only true ifp x andp y are statistically independent, which isnot necessary for axial symmetry.
