1. DuPont H: Guidelines on acute infectious diarrhea in adults. Am J Gastroenterol 1997, 92:1962–1975. These are important and reasonable consensus guidelines on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of acute infectious diarrhea and gastroenteritis. Comprehensive references and practical advice on treatment strategies are included. The strategy is to rule out bacterial and parasitic causes. The paper does not elaborate on specific viral causes.
2. Fankhauser R, Noel J, Monroe S, et al.: Molecular epidemiology of "Norwalk-like viruses" in outbreaks of gastroenteritis in the United States. J Infect Dis 1998, 178:1571–1578. In this study, RT-PCR was used to show that 86 of 90 US epidemics of acute gastroenteritis were caused by caliciviruses. The types of epidemics and means of spread are fully described. This study tends to take the mystery out of epidemic gastroenteritis in adults.
