Abstract

Thrombocytopenia dened as low platelets is attributed to variety of hematological and pathological disorders. During the evaluation of thrombocytopenic patients, it is very important to identify the cause of thrombocytopenia, whether it is due to hyper destruction or hypo production of platelets as it will ultimately have an impact on the management of the patient. A prospective study was conducted for a period of one and a half years on patients with thrombocytopenia. Platelet count (PC) Mean platelet volume (MPV), Plateletcrit (PCT), Platelet distribution width (PDW) and relevant clinical details of the patients were collected and analyzed for statistical signicance. A total of 80 thrombocytopenic patients were considered for the study, of which 48 belongs to hyper destructive group and 32 belong to hypo productive group. The analysis showed that the mean values of platelet indices like MPV, PDW were found to be higher in the hyper destructive group when compared with hypo productive group (p value-0.000). On comparison with the controls, both groups of thrombocytopenia showed a statistically signicant difference with p value of 0.000 in all the four indices. It was concluded that MPV and PDW can be used as screening test for differentiating both types of thrombocytopenia and may help in avoiding or delaying the irrelevant invasive procedures like BMA.
