Abstract
Introduction: To analyse and compare outcomes between haemorrhoidectomies performed with conventional Milligan Morgan technique vs
surgery using radiofrequency device. Materials: RCT study conducted in a tertiary care, teaching hospital on patients of age 18-70 years from
either gender with symptomatic grade III/ IV haemorrhoids undergoing haemorrhoidectomy. Results: 25 patients each were randomised into two
groups with comparable baseline parameters. Ease of surgery was 7.6+0.69 and 8.64+1.05 (mean + SD) for MMH and RFH groups respectively.
Similarly, intra-operative blood loss was 18.92+5.06 and 9.56+3.52 ml; time taken was 18.64+3.59 and 8.4+1.83 min; 24 hr post op site pain was
8.44+1.35 and 7.24+1.03; and hospital stay was 2.64+1.02 and 2.02+0.96 days for MMH group and RFH groups respectively. Early complications
were comparable; however, long term complications were noted to be higher in MMH group. Conclusion: Radio-frequency ablation technique
was found to have better operative parameters with lesser complications, and hence recommended.
