FOREIGN BODIES IN UPPER DIGESTIVE TRACT - A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY.

Abstract

Introduction: Majority of the foreign body ingestions occur in patient between age of 6 months and 6 years. Variety of foreign bodies may enter the digestive tract accidentally. Many pass spontaneously, but some become impacted, causing symptoms of obstruction. The cricopharynx and esophagus are the most common site of impaction. Nearly, all impacted objects can be removed endoscopically but, occasionally open surgery may be required. Retrospective study. The study includes 100 patients visiting the D Design of study: Materials and methods: epartment of ENT, Darbhanga Medical College & Hospital, Laheriasarai, Bihar, from October 2019 to September 2021. Most patients were children less Results: than 3 years of age 46% (n=46), followed by 3-6 years of age 28% (n=28). Dyspahgia 92% (n=92) was the most common presenting complaint rd followed by pain throat 82 %(n=82) & vomiting 32% (n=32). Most of the patients 88% (n=88) foreign body impacted at cricopharynx & upper 1/3 of esophagus. Majority of ptients were children less than 10 years of age 85%(n==85) prese Conclusion: nting mostly with dysphagia & pain throat. Early detection and rigid esophagoscopic removal can prevent from morbidity associated with the complications of foreign body impaction.
