In a companion paper, Professor Norton has presented the results of creep tests on tubes, carried out under Project 10, of the Joint Research Committee on Effect of Temperature on the Properties of Metals. The present paper contains a discussion of the phenomena involved in the light of the accepted theory of yielding, the theoretical basis for the present research program, and the significance of the results thus far obtained.
