1. In order to facilitate further research, we append a bibliography of theses and academic publications bearing specifically on Qur'anic exegesis in African languages. Only works that are entirely consecrated (or of which a distinct section is consecrated) to this topic are included. A fair number of works that deal partially with this topic are, however, cited in the individual papers or this introduction. A chronological analysis provides some measure of the progress of research in this field. Of the 55 works identified, one was published or composed in the 1920s; two in the 1960s; one in the 1970s; nine in the 1980s; fifteen in the 1990s; nineteen between 2000 and 2009; and
