Abstract

This paper informs engineers about the role and potential use of the global positioning system (GPS) in monitoring large structures, particularly bridges. It gives the briefest introduction to GPS and its different applications. GPS technology for the investigation of structures is described, along with some of the trials that have recently been completed. Outstanding issues for future research are identified.
