Abstract

The most common form of access scaffold in the UK is tube-and-fitting. The assumption of zero rotational stiffness and strength in putlog connections is one of the factors leading to a reduction in the performance of these scaffolds when designed according to the latest European codes EN 12810 and EN 12811. In addition, limited data are available for the design of right-angled couplers. This paper summarises research undertaken to determine the rotational strength and stiffness of these connectors in order to obtain more realistic designs. A total of 30 tests were carried out on three types of putlog connector, 30 tests on three types of right-angled connector and six tests on a band and plate connector according to the procedures in EN 12811 part 3. A discussion of the applicability of the code is included and design recommendations produced.
