Abstract
The literature on alcohol use and abuse among the elderly is less than consistent. Many clinical observations have been confused with "facts" about the elderly. One clear case of confusion is reported, with some tracing of the problem. Issues in the analysis of life crisis events are discussed, and data are presented based on the NORC General Social Survey. The lack of studies that are comprehensive is noted, and problems associated with designs of a limited nature for group comparisons are discussed.
