Abstract
Literature on the psychological reaction to environments with and without windows is reviewed. It is concluded that acceptance of a windowless space is governed by the characteristics of the space itself. Beneficial qualities of windows include view, sunshine, daylight, and spaciousness. View appears critical in determining preferred size and shape of windows. The paper is an extended summary of NBS Building Science series publication 70.
