Abstract
Deep burns over the dorso-lateral aspect of the hand can lead to hyperextension of the fifth metacarpophalangeal joint and flexion of the PIP joint as a result of scar contracture. Weakness of intrinsic musculature inhibits active correction. Thermoplastic night splintage is often inadequate in prophylaxis of this deformity and daytime splintage, which allows functional activity is necessary. The flexion device described can be worn day and night with the joint in varying degrees of flexion. Used prophylactically, with an exercise regime, this deformity can be prevented in burns and in other cases of hand injury.
