Abstract
The compact source iodide lamp (CSI) provides radiation simulating that of the sun at the earth's surface for testing new products. With a general awareness that solar energy must also be harnessed for the future, a convenient economical system to obtain over 1000 W/m2 is provided by a number of CSI lamps. This type of metal halide lamp operating from the normal supply mains provides useful advantages over other known light sources with its well balanced radiation qualities and its own integral optics providing high utilisation of the available light flux with good directional control and intensity. Increasing use is being made of this lamp for solar simulating testing in a controlled environment where groups of 6-50 lamps or more can meet the technical requirements for solar simulation studies.
