Abstract
Reaction of cellulose carbamate with p-nitroaniline seems to occur via direct condensation of the amino group of p- nitroaniline with the carbamate groups of cellulose carbamzte. This reaction was effected by using three techniques: viz. a) padding cellulose carbamate in p-nitroaniline dissolved in acetone, drying, and baking at 180°C; b) padding cotton cellulose in aqueous urea solution, drying, then padding in p-nitroaniline solution, drying, and baking; and c) padding cotton cellulose in a solution containing urea together with p-nitroaniline in water/acetone mixture, drying, then baking. The extents of reaction for the three techniques were identical, provided that factors governing the extent of reaction were kept identical. These factors were urea and p-nitroaniline concentrations, temperature, and time of baking. The reaction product of cellulose carbamate with p-nitroaniline could be used to bring about a set of different colors by sub jecting it to reduction, diazotization, and coupling with different coupling agents. Trials to replace p-nitroaniline with o-nitroanHine and aniline were also made.
