Abstract
An apparatus has been built that measures the surface cooling rate of a ventilated cylinder. A special feature is that relative air motion is induced by moving the cylinder through still air, rather than by a more conventional wind tunnel. Initial measurements have been of the angular distribution of the cooling rate, the effects of permeability of fabrics covering the cylinder, and factors that influence the effectiveness of fabrics containing phase change materials in improving protection from cold weather.
