Abstract

Measurements of refractive indices of slack-mercerized and subsequently stretched cotton fibers, in combination with the observed changes in fiber dimensions, can be used to calculate the spiral angle and orientation factor. The latter seems to show a maximum at 90-95% of the original length. The fiber tenacity can be related to the spiral angle and the orientation factor.
