Abstract
Anorectal problems are more common in the postmenopausal woman. This appears to be due largely to loss of collagen tissue integrity. This review describes anorectal pathophysiology and the effects of ageing. The two principal conditions in the menopause are faecal incontinence and constipation. The contributory factors prolapse, hysterectomy, anorectal surgery, sexual abuse, diabetes mellitus, colon or rectal cancer, multiple sclerosis and rectal prolapse are discussed.
