Abstract
Originating in England, infection control nurse posts have become well established throughout the world over the last 45 years. As health care during this time has changed, so has the role of the infection control nurse. However, some of the role components and the challenges faced are the same in 2005 as they were in 1959. While infection control nurses are responsible for implementing a large element of an establishment's infection control programme, other staff groups also now play important roles in supporting infection prevention activities. This article describes the development of the infection control nurse in English hospitals and identifies role developments that will enable them to function in an ever-changing healthcare environment.
