Major depression is thought to be one of the most common psychiatric disorders in HIV-infected persons. Research on aspects of HIV disease and depression is critically reviewed with the aim of synthesis and evaluation. Consideration is given to the clinical/psychiatric aspects of HIV infection, previous psychopathology in HIV-infected individuals, cognitive/neurologic manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment approaches. Directions for future research are offered, and finally, implications for clinical practice are specified.
