The Service Pattern-Oriented Smart Bedroom Based on Elderly Spatial Behaviour Patterns

Abstract

This paper stresses the importance of the service patterns matching the behaviours of residents in improving comfort, safety, convenience, etc in homes for the aged. The paper particularly focuses on the smart services (SVs) a bedroom can provide for the elderly. This paper derives three service patterns (SVPs) based on the elderly spatial behaviour patterns (SBP). The first pattern is SVP1 (intrusion/theft prevention → temperature/humidity control → health care/emergency system) for solving potential problems during sleep in mobility and cognition of the elderly. The second pattern is SVP2 (temperature/humidity control → health care, medical examination → smart furniture) for controlling interior environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, ventilation, lighting, etc. The final pattern is SVP3 (entertainment → remote control, smart furniture → intrusion/theft prevention → temperature/humidity control, lighting control → health care, emergency call) that offers entertainment and leisure for the elderly to relieve their loneliness. Suggested service patterns largely place a great deal of weight on such aspects as comfort, health and emergency, because smart technologies are included for the convenience of old people who are fragile from physical, psychological and social perspectives. All service patterns provide a healthy management of the elderly. Moreover, each service pattern can be customized to behaviour patterns determined by habit, lifestyle and needs.
