Dynamic recrystallisation (DRX) map of magnesium alloy for texture control with hot processing

Abstract

To control the microstructure of the Mg–5Zn–3Sn–1Mn–0.5Ca–0.5Cu alloy, a dynamic recrystallisation (DRX) mechanism map is constructed to facilitate the selection of deformation conditions to activate certain softening mechanisms. The DRX mechanism of the alloy is determined under different Zener–Hollomon values, where continuous DRX is the restoration mechanism when lnZ is lower than 30.4 and twin DRX and particle stimulated nucleation dominate when lnZ is higher than 34.6. The DRX map is constructed by assigning softening mechanisms to different regions of the deformation temperature-strain rate map. Representative deformation conditions are selected according to the DRX map for extrusion, and the results testify to the validity of the map. The mechanical properties of the alloy with different textures are analysed.
