Abstract
This study examined the purposes reported by Asian and Caucasian students for participating in physical activity. Data from subjects (N=413) in coeducational activity classes self-identified as Caucasian (n=250) or Asian (n=163) were collected using the Purposes for Engaging in Physical Activity Scale (PEPAS). Chi square analyses revealed significant relationships between (a) choice of activity and ethnicity, (b) commitment to an active lifestyle and ethnicity, and (c) perceived skill level and ethnicity. Items from the PEPAS that best distinguished the two groups pertained to catharsis, motor control, and socio-cultural issues.
