Evaluation of the Fibre-Matrix Debond Strength of a Ti-22Al-23Nb (AT.%)/Trimarc Metal Matrix Composite

Abstract

A methodology involving experimental testing using a cruciform specimen geometry has been developed which assists fibre/matrix debond strength calculations for continuously reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) [1-11]. Using this methodology the interfacial debond strength of a MMC consisting of a Ti-22Al-23Nb(at.%) matrix alloy embedded with Trimarc silicon-carbon fibres was evaluated. The fibre/matrix debond location was identified to be within the carbon layers at the fibre-matrix interface and the debond strength was found to be almost negligible.
