Abstract
It has been observed that China has low recidivism rates compared to the United States. This study examines contributing factors to China's low recidivism rates by discussing unique features of Chinese culture, major principles of offender reform, and informal control mechanisms. Furthermore, the study cites examples of social correlates of recidivism from a nationwide study of recidivism conducted in China. The current study offers a comparative perspective in rehabilitation that may be valuable for criminological research and crime control practice.
