Abstract
Sinus surgery can, by ventilation and drainage, assist in curing infection. It does nothing to cure atopy or vasomotor rhinitis owing to autonomic dysfunction with cholinergic excess. Four etiologic factors may coexist in the same patient: 1) Infection with bacterial allergy; 2) Atopy (food or inhalant sensitivity); 3) Cholinergic vasomotor rhinitis and 4) Endocrine abnormality, notably poor adrenocortical function. Medical treatment must be continued after operation.
