Abstract

Abstract: One of the leading risk factors for the development of diabetes mellitus and its complications are overweight or obesity. The Russian Federation is in the category of 10 countries in the World with the highest prevalence of obesity. Therefore in Russia, according to the results of the ESSE-RF study, about a third of women (30.8%) and almost a quarter of men (23.2%) are obese. Overweight and obesity are also a risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, liver disease and cancer. The total number of patients with diabetes mellitus according to the Federal Register of Diabetic Patients in Russia as of April 19, 2021 was 4.849 million people (3.3% of the population of the Russian Federation), including type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) - 5.4 % (267.0 thousand), type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) - 92.3% (4.48 million), other types of diabetes - 2.3% (101.4 thousand). According to a study of 434 patients with an established diagnosis of diabetes mellitus on the effect of being overweight on the risk of complications associated with diabetes mellitus, it was found that, as in the group with type 1 diabetes mellitus (RR = 1.664, 95% CI 1.07 –2.58) and in the group with type 2 diabetes mellitus (RR = 1.616, 95% CI 1.30–2.00), overweight was a statistically significant risk factor for complications. Evidence suggests the need to establish active implement for evaluation system for assessing the presence of various risk factors for the development of complications associated with diabetes mellitus and to change approaches in the prevention and treatment of diabetes.
