Abstract
It is shown that in dry sedimentary rock the velocity of elastic waves depends not only on the present values of the internal and external pressures but also on the past pressure history of the sample. The internal and external pressures are shown to be equally effective in changing velocities, provided the pressure differential follows a pressure cycle previously impressed upon the sample.
