1. MEIis continuing this work with potential application ofhydrogen sensors in a variety ofindustrial environments. For example, useofahydrogen sensor to detect degradation ofthe health oftransformers isbeing explored. Aselectricalinsulation in a transformer breaks down prior toitsfailure, hydrogen is released. Monitoring of hydrogen in-situ in thesetransformerscan provide early detection of transformer degradationand avoid costly catastrophicfailure of transformers in the field. The PdAgsensors have already been applied to automotiveleak testing applications15and thecomplete product has been internationally recognized with a 1995 R&D100 Award. Other possibleapplications include the monitoring ofhydrogen releasesfrom fuel cellsand industrial safety monitoring.
