Abstract

In this work the research of Cr-doped SiC ceramics as a promising material for containers for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste was carried out. Samples were investigated using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, microhardness measurements, nanoindentation and corrosion resistance tests. Obtained results showed that addition of 0.3…0.7 wt.% of Cr improves the mechanical properties of SiC ceramics. Corrosion tests in distilled water at T = 90 °C and immersion time of up to 4300 h revealed that Cr addition slows down corrosion processes in SiC ceramics. The average dissolution rate of SiC(Cr) samples in water is quite low and does not exceed the value of 0.16 μm/year.
