Abstract

The de-excitation of metastable (23 S1) He* atoms upon scattering from clean, NO- and CO-covered Cu(100) and Pd(111) surfaces has been investigated, and the He* survival probability was measured as a function of the NO and CO coverage. The corresponding adlayer structures were characterized in situ by ground state He atom scattering (HAS). The present results support an earlier interpretation of metastable de-excitation spectroscopy (MDS) data indicating a suppression of the resonance ionization (RI) de-excitation channel in the case of CO adsorption due to a screening of the metal surface by the adsorbate layer. In contrast, for NO on Pd(111) no increase of the He* survival probability was observed.
