Abstract

Abstract A commercial silica cartridge was used successfully to separate the fraction of the unsaponifiable components of edible oils containing the sterols and some related compounds. Analysis by gas chromatography indicates that there is good agreement between the results from samples obtained by the new rapid method and those isolated using the time-consuming thin-layer chromatographic technique. This paper presents comparison data for 7 vegetable oils (peanut, soy, corn, rapeseed, olive, sesame, and coconut), a 2-component blend (olive and soy), and a commercial milk product erroneously labeled cholesterol-free.
