The Internal Dimension

Abstract

Abstract The internal life of social movements is largely oriented toward fulfilling a range of functions and tasks that are more variegated and demanding than one might assume from an outsider perspective. Social movements tend to develop a—mostly informal—division of labor. In the absence of institutionalized structures to steer or command a movement, ongoing investments are needed to recruit and motivate members: to organize, make decisions, mobilize resources, collect information and, probably most importantly, to strengthen collective identity at different levels with regard to different ideological strands. The necessity of decision-making and the existence of leadership aspects of power come into play even in movements that embrace equality and grassroots organizing.
