Abstract

AbstractThe studies throughout this text are pulled together to explore how the changing themes of Athenian art, in particular, relate to the history of Athens as a social and political unit. The strength of the evidence for seventh-century Athens as a formally organized community is stressed, as is the extent of tensions within that community. The distribution of Athenian pottery across the Mediterranean emphasizes the extent to which Athens was economically embedded within the wide Mediterranean world and the importance of Athenian craftsmen in those networks. A part, at least, of what was special about Athens was the variety of economic resources on which it could call.
