Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses the history of Armenians in Turkey. With the Armenian genocide, Armenian life in the provinces was brought to an end, as planned by the Ottoman government of the time. This article follows the lines of continuities from the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic. It argues that policies implemented throughout the 20th and 21st have been heavily embedded in the experiences and reservoir of knowledge that was accumulated during the 19th century and First World War. The post-1923 in Turkey was a period in which Armenian survivors continued to live under existential threats, Armenian institutions were unable to function according to the laws and regulations of Armenian administration, and most importantly the Treaty of Lausanne, the guarantor of the rights and entitlements for remaining Armenians, was de facto only applied in Istanbul. For the rest of the country, neither Armenian institutions nor Armenian cultural life was allowed to flourish again.
