Child Protection Systems

Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses the global typology of child protection systems. It also highlights how child protection continues to evolve within and across countries. In line with the UNCRC, countries are mandated to protect children’s civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights equal to those of adults. The UNCRC’s Article 19 is primarily focused on protecting children from abuse, neglect, and maltreatment when parents or families are incapable of caring for them. Additionally, the legal authority and responsibility of states are the essential features of child protection systems. Research sparked insights into how societal and cultural differences affect protective services and preliminary typologies of child protection systems. Interventions were driven by high-risk situations for the child in the child protection system and their needs in the family service system.
