Abstract

BACKGROUND

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, which encompasses more than just the absence of disease or infirmity. In accordance with this definition, defines periodontal health as the absence of inflammatory periodontal disease, allowing individuals to function normally without suffering consequences. Adequate instruction and motivation of patients for proper oral hygiene is crucial for successful periodontal treatment, and self-performed regular oral hygiene has been identified as a key factor in preventing oral disease. Various methods, including mobile health (mHealth) apps, have been utilized for oral disease prevention, as they provide health education and monitoring. The objective of our study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an existing mobile application in promoting periodontal health.

OBJECTIVE

Review objective To evaluate the effectiveness of existing mobile applications or text messages to enhance periodontal health among patients in comparison to no mobile application or intervention.

METHODS

This systematic review will incorporate all randomized controlled trials that have been published, featuring interventions utilizing mobile applications or text messages to improve periodontal health. Various databases (PubMed, EbschoHost, CINAHL Plus, Dentistry & Oral Sciences, and Academic Search Complete, ScienceDirect, and Scopus) will be searched to identify relevant studies. To qualify for this study, randomized controlled trials must include the use of mobile applications or Short Message Service (SMS) messages to promote periodontal health. Patients of all ages and health status who are capable of independent participation and studies published in English will also be considered. Patients with aggressive periodontitis, studies focused on enhancing tooth mobility, and those who cannot participate independently will be excluded from this study.

RESULTS
