Abstract

Introduction: Pain and limitation of movement can be seen in patients who underwent tube thoracostomy after thoracic surgery. Objective: This study was conducted to examine the pain levels and activities of daily living of patients who underwent tube thoracostomy after thoracic surgery. Method: The study is a descriptive and correlational study. The sample consisted of 130 patients who underwent tube thoracostomy after thoracic surgery in two university hospitals. Individual Characteristics Form, Mcgill Melzack Pain Questionnaire, Visual Analog Scale and Katz Daily Living Activities Index were used in our research. In the analysis of the data, Kruskal Wallis, sperm correlation and linear regression analysis were performed. Results: The mean age of the patients who underwent tube thoracostomy after thoracic surgery was 54.46±16.39 years. 67.7%of the patients were male and 63.8%were operated with the thoracotomy method. The mean pain score of the patients was 4.15 ± 2.42 (out of 10). According to the Mcgill Melzack Pain Questionnaire, 55.4%of the patients stated that moving increased their pain. It was found that 75.4%of the patients were dependent on dressing and 50.8%in bathroom activities. A statistically significant negative moderate correlation was found between Katz Activities of Daily Living Index total score and pain score averages (r: .44, p:0.000). The prediction between the independent variables of patients' gender, age category, surgery method, total score of activities of daily living and pain intensity was examined. It was found that the independent variables of the patients' gender (β:.-232 p: .004) and ADL total score (β:-.373 p: .000) significantly predicted the severity of pain and the model was significant (p:.000). It was found that the variables explained 27%of the total variance. Conclusion: It was determined that the patients experienced moderate pain after the surgery and they were found to be addicted in their daily living activities. As the pain severity of the patients increases, their addiction in daily living activities increases. Key Words: Thoracic Surgery, Tube Thoracostomy, Pain, Activities of Daily Living, Nursing.
