Abstract
Abstract
The paper contains arguments in favour of a negative answer to the question posed in its title. They are based on a biphonemic treatment of Icelandic ‘long’ consonants, which is supported by phonetic and morphological data. The problem is discussed from the synchronic and diachronic viewpoints. The solution adopted throws new light on Icelandic pre-aspiration of stops, dissimilation of sonants, vowel diphthongization.
