Abstract
Gangrene of the skin and deeper tissues, a rare complication of varicella, has been reported several times during the last 20 years.1-7 A review of these and older reports has led me to believe that varicella gangrenosa is a descriptive term for a variety of conditions. This is not a new concept, but one propounded in 1959,1 or possibly even earlier.
One of these conditions is moist gangrene, believed to be an infectious complication of varicella caused mostly by hemolytic Streptococcus or Staphylococcus aureus.1,2,6
