Abstract

The youth legal system (commonly referred to as the juvenile justice system) in the United States is a complex, decentralized system primarily administered at the state and local levels. Working knowledge regarding the design and process of the youth legal system can help inform clinical and advocacy efforts intended to improve outcomes and eliminate racial and ethnic disparities for youth involved in the legal system. Advocates can work to bring awareness and dismantle inequities in all settings, especially the legal system, to avoid compounding the negative consequences in the lives of youth.
