Abstract
The research grew from an interest in the way client’s progressed through the CMHT, and the type of intervention that is offered to them. We had carried out various different research pieces, about the referrals made to the psychology service within the CMHT over an 18-month period. The initial process involved ‘eyeballing’ the referrals and the attendance of first appointments. This led to the introduction of an opt-in procedure in August 1999. Prior to this all clients were offered an appointment following a referral for psychological intervention. When the opt-in procedure was implemented, clients were sent an information sheet about the psychology service and asked to return a questionnaire, if they wished to pursue the referral. Once they had returned the questionnaire, indicating their ‘opting-in’ to the service, they were offered an appointment for an initial consultation.
