Abstract
Key digested message
Adolescence is a time of change and transition and there is an
increasing focus on the difficulties experienced at this time of life.
Professionals working with this population should aim to support young
people through these changes and make a successful transition into
adulthood. The diagnostic model of mental health actively gets in the way of
these aims, reducing self-efficacy, stigmatising developing identities, and
focusing on illness rather than health. An emotionally-focused model is
provided as an alternative, which supports young people to identify as
fundamentally similar to others, but also provides clear directions to
improve their lives.
