Abstract
This paper emerged from the author’s concern that mental health commissioners may interpret NICE recommendations as meaning that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a panacea. It documents the case of an individual for whom CBT may have been an appropriate but not necessarily optimal intervention. IThe case outline is followed by a critical analysis of cognitive behavioural and Kleinian approaches, concluding that the Kleinian approach offered long-term advantages to this client.
