Brief Biography of Dr. Marvin E. Goldstein and a Short Survey of his Contributions to Jet Noise and Rapid Distortion Theory

Abstract

This article is a brief biographical outline of Dr. Marvin E. Goldstein's professional career and a short survey of his contributions to two particular areas of aeroacoustics: jet noise and rapid distortion theory. This survey is not exhaustive or complete and is subject to my own personal biases. However, I have attempted to highlight what seem to me to be the most important technical contributions in these areas and tried to give some idea of their impact on the field of aeroacoustics. For the latter, I have described some of the many follow-on works by other researchers who have picked up on Dr. Goldstein's original ideas and mathematical formulations, either through further theoretical development, numerical implementation of the resulting equations or adoption of these approaches to the development of practical noise prediction methods. It is not possible to list all of these here and I offer my apologies in advance to those who do not find their work cited. Among the works cited are publications that have appeared in the last few years as well as work that is currently under way. It is my hope that this review will provide some context to Dr. Goldstein's work in these areas and show its continued influence on research in aeroacoustics.
