Abstract
In Turkey, the most significant development in production is observed in thermal power sector. In 2003, its share is about 74.78% (104,898 GWh/year) of total production (140,283 GWh) of the country. Turkey is mainly focused on increased natural gas use for Thermal Electric Power Plant production. In 2003, natural gas share is about 44.41% (62,300 GWh/year) of the total electricity production of the country. Electricity production from lignite in Turkey is 23,630 GWh and share of lignite in total generated electricity is 16.85% in 2003. Consumption of lignite for electricity generation is 82% of total lignite production. The Pliocene aged Elbistan coal field the largest lignite basin of Turkey where there are 4 sectors and only one of them is in production. Thermal power stations, having an installed capacity of power 4×340 MW, are based on lignite in this area.
