Abstract

In the context of forensic pathology training milestones, which attempt to define measurable training progress and outcomes, this report contains a list of recommended reading for forensic pathology fellows as well as a bibliography of reference materials with which the forensic pathology trainees should be familiar. The list was developed via a survey and ballot involving forensic pathology fellowship training directors and the National Association of Medical Examiners’ (NAME) Forensic Pathology Training Committee. Five reading resources were identified as strongly recommended reading for forensic pathology fellows and those include: 1) NAME'S “Guide for Manner of Death Classification,” 2) NAME'S “Forensic Autopsy Performance Standards,” 3) DiMaio's “Gunshot Wounds”; 4) Moritz’ “Classic Mistakes in Forensic Pathology,” and 5) Spitz and Fisher's “Medicolegal Investigation of Death.” Dozens of other reference sources were compiled into several lists as a reference for forensic pathology fellows and training program directors. It is hoped that this document will be useful to forensic pathology training programs both for fellow education and to assist in the development of training milestones and training requirements.
