Abstract

Fluorescence microscopy of F-actin in the red blood cell (RBC) spectrin network reveals brightly stained foci that depend on actin polymerization and undergo local nanoscale motions in live RBCs. Nanoscale clustering of F-actin nodes into foci requires reevaluation of RBC shape and membrane curvature models that rely on uniform network dimensions.
