Abstract

Gynaecological examination in paediatric and adolescent age is a fundamental tool for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of many pathologies with potential consequences for adult life and future fertility. It also provides an opportunity to intercept previously unknown underlying pathologies. It is also a chance to offer information, education and in-depth discussion on issues that are fundamental to the full physical and psychological wellbeing of the patient. The paediatrician plays a decisive role in the selection and referral of patients requiring such an assessment and in choosing the right time for a visit that is, and must remain, a fundamental stage in the life and medical history of every woman.
